Peony Season in San Francisco

Peonies arrive for only a short moment each year, making them one of the most anticipated flowers of the season in our studio. Known for their layered petals, soft fragrance, and dramatic transformation as they open, peonies have become a favorite for gifting, celebrations, and flowers for home.

At Niolia Flowers, we source seasonal peonies daily for luxury arrangements and same-day flower delivery in San Francisco. Every peony arrangement is designed using the freshest blooms available that morning, with varieties and color palettes changing throughout the season.

Why Peonies Are So Loved

Peonies are known for their unusually large blooms, delicate fragrance, and constantly changing shape. Many varieties arrive tightly closed and slowly unfold over several days, transforming from sculptural buds into wide, cloud-like flowers.

Part of what makes peonies so special is their seasonality. Unlike flowers available year-round, peony season feels temporary and highly anticipated. Their limited availability, combined with their dramatic appearance and soft movement, has made them one of the most recognizable luxury flowers in the world.

Some peonies feel airy and romantic, while others open into dense, layered blooms with hundreds of petals. No two arrangements open exactly the same way.

When Is Peony Season in California?

Peony season typically begins in late spring and reaches its peak between May and June in California. During this time, farms begin harvesting some of the most sought-after varieties, including Coral Charm, Sarah Bernhardt, Bowl of Cream, and Duchess de Nemours.

Early in the season, peonies often appear in coral, salmon, and brighter pink tones. As the season progresses, softer blush, white, and pastel varieties become more widely available.

Because peonies are highly seasonal, availability can change daily depending on weather, grower harvests, and flower market supply. Certain varieties may only appear for a few weeks each year.
